Training Classes

The Lomita Obedience Training Club offers a variety of classes in three categories:

  • Companion Dog Training: These classes are designed to help you teach your dogs or puppies the behaviors, skills and manners they need to become good companions. You will learn and practice training techniques based on positive reinforcement such as marking behavior, verbal praise, and food rewards.
  • AKC Competition Obedience Training: These classes are designed to prepare you to compete in obedience and rally. You will develop the knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to enter and show your dog. These include ring procedure, handling and knowledge of the required exercises.
  • Conformation Training: This workshop provides the opportunity to practice showing your purebred dog in Conformation. Skills include learning how to gait your dog in a show ring, how to prepare for a judge's examination and how to present the optimal picture to a conformation judge.

Companion Dog Training

Puppy Manners

Description: This class is designed to give your puppy a great start in the world by working on confidence-building, manners and socialization. Fun and positive reinforcement, including verbal praise and treats, are the focus as you introduce your puppy to basic companion dog skills such as sit, down, come and stay. In addition, class exercises are structured to help build self-control and learning skills in your puppy.

At the start of the session puppies should be between the ages of 8 weeks to 6 months for most breeds. Exceptions may be made for older puppies smaller than 15 pounds or tiny adult dogs. There will be a $5 materials fee to be paid to the instructor at the first class. Collars or harnesses should be leather or nylon – NO metal collars. (Please call the instructor if you have questions about this)

Requirements: Puppies 9 weeks to 6 months. Puppy must have been in your care for at least 3 weeks. Classes cannot accept dogs with extreme aggression problems.

Beginning Companion Dog

BeginningDescription: This class is designed to help you teach your dog the behaviors, skills and manners they need to become a good companion. You will develop better communication with your dog by learning to get and keep your dog’s attention. You will learn and practice training techniques based on positive reinforcement, including marking desired behavior, verbal praise and treats.

Basic companion dog skills include: come, sit, down, stay/wait and walking on a loose leash as well as some tricks and games. Good manners include: polite greetings, not jumping on people and remaining focused around distractions. Class exercises are structured to build handler awareness of potential behavior problems as well as building each dog’s self-control. This class is also a great first step in preparing for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC title) certification.

Requirements: Dogs 5 months and older. Dog must have been in your care for at least 3 weeks. Classes cannot accept dogs with extreme aggression problems. There will be a $5 materials fee paid to the instructor at the first class (AM only).

Intermediate Companion Dog

IntermediateDescription: This class is designed to help you advance your training skills and take your dog’s accomplishments to a higher level. You will build on the communication and positive reinforcement techniques so that getting and keeping your dog’s attention becomes second nature. This is the perfect prep class for taking the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC title) assessment which can be administered after the final class. It is also a great foundation class for those considering other competitive dog sports (e.g. obedience, agility, herding etc.). You are welcome to repeat this class.

Specifically you will be working on adding duration and distance to “stay”, speed and distance to “come”, formal “heeling” and additional behaviors you need from your companion. We also take it up a notch by adding distractions to all of these exercises. Your dog must have completed and excelled in the “Beginning Companion Dog Training” class or have prior approval of the instructor.

Requirements: Completion of beginning companion dog class.

Dog Tricks

Tricks to MusicDescription: This class, taught by a certified Trick Dog Instructor, will introduce you and your dog to more then 30 fun and unusual tricks. Trick training provides physical and mental challenges for your dog and a rewarding experience for you. Teaching tricks can: keep your dog busy and active, make your therapy dog's visit more entertaining and add enthusiasm to your obedience dog's performances. But most of all, dog tricks are a lot of fun!

Make sure to ask our certified Trick Dog Instructor about obtaining a Trick Dog title. This versatile title allows you to select 15 tricks (from a list of over 100 tricks) to perform like: ring a bell, back up, leg weave, spin circles, pick up toys, sit, come, leave it, soccer, shell game, peekaboo or close a door.

Requirements: Dogs 4 months and older. Dogs must be in your care for at least 3 weeks.

AKC Competition Obedience Training

Beginning AKC Competition Obedience

Description: This class is designed for dog/handler teams new to competitive obedience and interested in training their dogs for AKC Beginner Novice (BN) or Novice (CD) titles and beyond. Handlers develop knowledge, skills and abilities needed to enter and compete with their dogs. Skills include: ring procedure, handling and footwork. Participants in this small group class also develop individualized training plans to advance their skill level with the required AKC exercises. More advanced handlers with a dog new to Competitive Obedience are also welcome.

Requirements: Solid foundation in basic obedience exercises, such as heel, sit, stay and recall.

Length: 6 weeks

Advanced and Competition AKC Obedience

Description: This class is geared for people/dogs who already possess a solid obedience foundation and who have successfully mastered the skills taught in Intermediate Companion Dog or a similar class. Akin to the “brush up” classes of yesteryear, this class focuses on honing the skills required for AKC competition – precision heeling, fronts and finishes, recall, stand for exam, group exercises, and additional skills depending on class need and interest.

Requirements: Successful completion of Intermediate Companion Dog or a similar class (note: If similar class, permission of instructor is required). Class size is limited to 10 dogs.

AKC Competition Obedience Ring Workshop

Description: This workshop provides help with ring procedure and training for participants' specific challenges. The sessions focus on ring work in Novice, Open and Utility with group exercises at the end. Our experienced instructors use positive reinforcement methods and tailor the training exercises to each dog/handler team. Workshop sessions are limited in the number of participants so call Ruth Nunn for availability, times and locations.

Requirements: Demonstrable obedience skills and permission of the instructor.

Rally Obedience

Description: This class is designed to give you and your dog a fun way to practice and polish basic obedience skills, while heeling through a course with various AKC rally stations. The class will train you how to execute all of the Novice level signs, with an introduction of the Advanced level signs. A fun way to develop obedience skills for you and your dog as well as preparing for AKC “Rally” Competition and Titles.

Conformation Training

Conformation Workshop

Description: This workshop provides the opportunity to practice showing your purebred dog in Conformation. Exercises are practiced in a positive way to build confidence in both the dog and handler.
